Transport Layer Security and Secure Sockets Layer (TLS/SSL)

Transport Layer Security and Secure Sockets Layer are certificates that ensure your internet connection is secure. The S in HTTPS comes from using certificates like these to ensure your data is encrypted. Websites without these certificates won’t be classed as secure. Using encryption is “scrambles” the data to prevent any information being read by anyone outside of this request and response.

But what’s the difference between the two you ask…

SSL is the predecessor to TLS. TLS is an updated and more secure version of SSL. If you click on the lock symbol in the address bar when visiting a website, you can see the details of the certificate the website has.
